Abstract:

Description is given of an early ontogeny of ligule in Isoetes. The flap-like portion of ligule protects young leaf primordium, whereas the basal glossopodium is large, complicated and remain embedded in leaf tissue and functions as a haustorial structure. The ligule is comparable to the prophyll of monocots and ochreole of Equisetum.
